Black Sheep Brewery - Monty Python's Dead Parrot Amber Ale - Aldi Beer Review

Review Date: 31/12/2021
Brewery Name: Black Sheep Brewery (Masham, UK)
Beer Name: Monthy Python's Dead Parrot Norwegian Amber Ale

We came across a few of Black Sheep Brewery's beers at our local Aldi store so thought we'd give them a try. This is the first of three beers we'll be reviewing from Black Sheep....

"This amber ale will leave you pining for the fjords and offers fresh hoppy notes of citrus fuits and a touch of pine, squawking against a bed of sweet malt and rye"

Notes

Although amber in colour, this one really seems to be lacking a little oomph in terms of flavour.
For us there just wasn't enough sweetness from the malt to go along with the hops and bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium - light, and carbonation is high. Some real piney flavours from the hops, a little bit of citrus as well. Its good but not great.

Upcoming KegLand Product Releases for 2022

Here are the speculated upcoming product releases for 2022 from KegLand. Some are 100% confirmed since the products are visible on the KegLand website - others are from a reputable source (see bottom of page).

Brewzilla Generation 4

Check out our blog post on the upcoming Brewzilla Generation 4. Expected release is from Mid January for Australia, and some time in the first quarter of 2022 for the rest of the world.

RAPT Temperature Controller

RAPT is the KegLand technology ecosystem that will be used to interconnect different devices such as their Pill hydrometer/thermometer, Brewzilla Gen 4, fermentation fridge and temperature controller. The temperature controller as you'd expect is similar to the common Inkbird temperature controllers, with 'hot' and 'cold' plugs, and is currently showing on the KegLand website

Some of the key features include;

  • PID heating function to reduce the chance of scorching and deliver more reliable temperature control with less fluctuations
  • Working temperature range from -20c to 120c
  • Various mounting options
  • Wifi connectivity
  • Full colour screen
An example scenario of how the RAPT system will work would be having the RAPT temperature controller being sent a signal to enable the cooling plug when the RAPT pill reaches the expected terminal gravity for the current brew. This kind of inter connectivity between devices is not currently possible, with cooling and heating functions being determined by time or temperature only. A whole range of automation and possibilities will be opened with the development of these products which is incredibly exciting for homebrewers.

Benchy Carbon

The Benchy Carbon is a 12-24V DC portable inline keg dispensing unit. This will allow for beer to be chilled and served from a non-chilled keg. The beer is chilled 'inline' as it is poured and processed through the unit. The most obvious use for this would be for camping and off-grid applications, given it's 12V power capabilities, but can also be powered from regular house hold power outlets with a specialised power adapter.

The inline chilling functionality is achieved via a carbon heat sink which means no glycol or other liquids are required which is a huge benefit as typically glycol needs to be removed from chilling systems prior to transportation in order to avoid spillage. Not having this limitation is a real game changer.

The Benchy Carbon is currently showing on the KegLand website

Hop Bong

The hop bong is a dry hopping device aimed to improve dry hopping by reducing/eliminating oxygen ingress when dry hopping. It's a tall, narrow tube with a tri clamp opening on either end, and an angled port where a carbonation cap can be fitted. It will be available in two tri clamp sizes - 1.5 inch and 2 inch.

Tri clamp fittings are an interesting detail here as it means this product will not be compatible with any of their Fermzilla products as they don't have any tri clamp connections. Their 29L and 58L kegmenters do have tri clamp connections though so it will work with these.

Check out our Rundown and First Impressions on the KegLand Hop Bong.

Tri Clamp Connections for the FermZilla

In order to allow connectivity of products like the Hop Bong mentioned above, it appears that tri clamp connectivity is coming to the Fermzilla range. From what we understand, this will be limited to the bottom port of the Conical Fermzilla and not the top port meaning unfortunately, the ever popular all-rounder Fermzilla model will miss out.

This product has now been released by KegLand - check out our first impressions of the FermZilla Tri-Conical here

Stainless Steel FermZilla

Potentially the most exciting bit of info is the possibility of a stainless steel FermZilla. The current range of FermZilla's are made of PET plastic, which has it's benefits - it's cheap, light, and clear (so you can see your beer fermenting), but they inevitably have a limited life span. A stainless model would take the Fermzilla range to the next level, and compete with the recently released Nano-X stainless fermenter range from Cheeky Peak Brewery. We'd expect to see tri clamp compatibility, pressure fermenting capabilities and a very sharp price point on these.

Duotight Integrated Quick Disconnects

The current range of quick disconnects require a separate MFL threaded duotight adapter to have duotight capability. A new range of quick disconnects appear to be on the horizon that eliminate this need and have the duotight adapter built in, making for a simpler, sleeker unit with less chance of leaks. Expect them to be available for gas and liquid quick disconnects and with a flow control version as well.

These have now been released and are available from the KegLand website. As predicted, there are flow control versions available as well with separate models for gas and liquid. We've recently purchased a couple of the non flow control models, so expect a review coming soon

Beer Cartel - 2021 Christmas Beer Advent Calendar - Review

After 25 days of enjoying a large variety of flavours and styles of beer, we wanted to reflect on our experience with the Beer Cartel Christmas Advent Calendar for 2021.

Firstly, the excitement of coming home each day to a new, unknown, surprise beer made for a little more excitement than we would have anticipated - it certainly seemed to bring out a little bit of the inner child within us. Kids get chocolate advent calendars (among others), so why shouldn't adults have something similar as well?

What was also special was the fact that most, if not all of these beers were special/limited editions - commissioned directly from craft breweries by Beer Cartel, specifically for their advent calendar. You can't buy these beers over the counter which is really cool - and almost definitely gave those craft breweries a certain freedom to try new and different things that they can't do with their core product range. This made for some unique beers and flavour experiences.

There were definitely a couple of standout beers - the Akasha Brewing Company's Ron McClane Cryo Pop IPA and the Sunday Road Brewing Co's Yule Fuel Cold IPA are the first that come to mind. But every beer was at the very least, good, in it's own way. Nothing was terrible by any measure, and every drop from every one of the 25 beers was happily consumed.

For beer enthusiasts, an advent calendar such as this one is an excellent way to get exposure to beers that you wouldn't otherwise drink, or buy for yourself. This is certainly true for us, with some of the darker porters and stouts that we don't typically consume. It's great because we found ourselves quite enjoying these other beers - an experience we wouldn't have otherwise had. Broadening your horizons is almost always a positive thing.

Turns out, overly sour beers aren't our thing, but we enjoyed the experience of drinking, tasting, and reviewing all these different, and sometimes quirky beers. It was also an excellent way for us to fine-tune our reviewing process, to make it more fair, consistent and standardised by having a set list of criteria for analysing each beer. Although time consuming, putting this all together was fun, and paying closer attention to each beer to analyse it more closely was really enjoyable and a good learning experience for us.

For anyone thinking about doing a beer advent calendar like this in the future, we can't recommend it enough. We'll certainly be doing it again next year!

Notes

Full on. That's the best way to describe this beer. The espresso flavour is completely prominent, and blends well with the dark malts that were used. There's a nice chocolate undertone too, which rounds out nicely on the palate. Hop flavours are very subdued, as you'd expect. This beer is not about hops. Mouthfeel is thick, almost chewy which is perfect for this rich style of beer. Something very different and very special for Christmas Day indeed, and a great way to finish off the 2021 Beer Cartel advent calendar.

"We've crafted an ode to the big Belgian blonde ales that have so much character and finesse, while being dangerously drinkable. This beer is all about the yeast, and one where the yeast strain (Westmalle Abbey) allows the malt and ester profile to work in harmony. Ideally serve chilled to about 5˚C in a large goblet, allowing the aromas from the yeast to shine. "

Boatrocker - Tripel - Blonde Strong Ale in the Craftd Alpha glass

Overall

Drinkability: 7/10

Overall Impression: 8/10

Notes

Another new beer experience for us, being our first Tripel. Plenty going on here, with a full on flavour punch that seems to be yeast dominated. Belgian style yeast is unmistakable with its unique flavour profile - throwing plenty of esters and phenols. This does, however, make it a little difficult to determine what flavours are from yeast, hops and the malt. No shortage of alcohol either at 9.2%. Lots of spicy, peppery notes mixed with some subtle fruit flavours. High carbonation and a medium to full body. At 9.2% there's plenty of kick to it, and the alcohol taste is very much present, but well balanced with all the other flavours.

Notes

It's amazing what breweries are able to do with beers these days. This is what we would consider a dessert beer, and it's great. Very much like a strawberry chuppa chup (lollipop) with loads of strawberry and vanilla flavours - as you'd rightfully expect from the name of this beer. Mouthfeel is medium light with some faint hop notes hiding behind the scenes. The balance is good - it's sweet as it should be but all seems to work well together. A fun, interesting and unique beer experience.

"A clean and crisp lager body, light gold in colour from the grist bill of Joe White Signature Pils malt and flaked corn. 4 different hops give layers of hop flavour and aroma. Cascade T-90 hops, along with a big load of Cryo hops in the form of Ekuanot, Amarillo and Sabro. Clean and sessionable for a summers day, with plenty of hops to keep the hop heads happy."

Drinkability: 10/10

Notes

This is a really good IPA. There's plenty of fruit punch from the hops, and plenty of bitterness too. But there's something about the bitterness that is so smooth and clean, and isn't unpleasant or overpowering at all. Perhaps from the T-90 hops? It balances perfectly with the mixture of flavour/aroma hops that give a great variety of fruit flavours from citrus to tropical and stone fruit. Very easy drinking and refreshing, with a decent amount of fizz and a light to medium body/mouthfeel hence the perfect drinkability score.

One of the best IPA's we've had - great stuff! We want more!
